Right off the bat, as soon as I began reading Andre and Bergmann's `Players, Pimps & Tricks', I was reminded of Guy Ritchie's early films, `Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' and `Snatch'--not in plot, but in humor. I immediately got the sense that I was in for an awesome experience--a great, rollercoaster of a read. And I was spot on.`Players, Pimps & Tricks' is about young mother Lily White, who only needs a temp job to get by. But she ends up `permanently temping' at Def Khan 5--the personal kingdom of (insane) rap music mogul Bigar Khan, populated by a cast of quirky, over-the-top characters you can only find in, well, a record label for rappers. Although hating to work there, Lily has no choice after finding out her husband has left her to join a religious cult. And there starts her bizarre and insanely hilarious `journey' to do `whatever it takes' for Bigar Khan.
`Players, Pimps & Tricks' is hands-down one of the funniest books I've recently read. The authors are obviously seasoned, exceptionally talented writers with an incredible sense of humor, and most of it can be read between the lines. A few paragraphs on the first page, I was already giggling, finding it hilariously absurd how someone like Lily White ends up in Khan's "office"; by page 5, I was roaring in laughter. And I was yet to reach that part where Khan jerks off to the sound of a woman's voice saying "Whatever it takes." Priceless.
I keep picturing Zooey Deschanel as Lily White, and Terry Crews as Bigar Khan, but maybe it's just me. In any case, the novel's so good that the biggest question in my head was "Who the heck is Marcella Andre and Joseph Bergmann? Who are these people, and why am I reading something from them only now?"
I can't recommend this book enough. `Players, Pimps & Tricks' is immensely enjoyable, and I think somebody like Guy Ritchie or Samuel Jackson should snatch up the movie rights now--lest Michael Bay does things to it that kills its spirit. This novel has a serious potential to be made into a Hollywood blockbuster, so here I am crossing my fingers, hoping that it happens soon. Five stars to this rare literary gem.

Players Pimps Tricks Marcella Andre Joseph Bergmann 9780985212728 Books Reviews
Players, Pimps & Tricks is by far one of the most hilarious books you will come across!
Lily White is a young mother in need of a temp job to get by. Like most single moms, she struggles financially and in her personal life. However, she realizes that she's now "permanently temping" in the land of a crazy rapper. Needless to say, Lily hates her job! After a series of unfortunate events, you will be laughing hysterically as you turn the pages to find out what will happen Lily next.
This book is clearly well written, funny, and unique. Highly recommended!
This is a book for those who like humor in their novels! It has all the elements for a madcap story. A single mom who has a husband in a cult is sent by a temp agency to work in an office full of rappers looking to make their mark. Lily White (get it?) is so completely out of her element that you have to wonder how she will manage. There are plenty of zany supporting characters, who each add their own issues to the mix. At several points you will find yourself saying "can it get any more ridiculous?" The answer is yes, yes it can.
A fun read with a lot of humor, I recommend it!
Freebie - and sometimes, you get what you paid for...
I feel bad, to a degree, for writing a review when I did not finish the book, but I couldn't. I'm no prude, and my ears lost their virginity many years ago, but when every other word turns out to be m-f, and it really felt gratuitous (to me at least), I couldn't read any more. It looked like it could be a fun book, a bit out of my usual read. But it wasn't. Or at least as far as I read.
This was a fairly short read, and while I enjoyed it, I had to force myself to continue through a few parts. Andre does a decent job of portraying the often crude, sexist, misanthropic, self-aggrandizing world of rap from decades ago; I imagine a lot of that attitude still persists today in the music industry, and not just in rap. My biggest complaint is that the characters never grow or change. Even Lily, our protagonist, fights to stay static for most of the story. Only at the very end does she finally cut loose, and that brings me to my second-biggest complaint the climax and denouement are pure deus ex machina, and totally unbelievable. I'm willing to tolerate a stretch of the imagination, but the ending just broke my suspension of disbelief because if how it essentially betrayed everything Lily had fought for throughout the book. I likely won't be giving it an additional read-through.
I am stymied. I cringed at the opening pages. Should I have been surprised? No, that wasn't it. It was just so ... so ... crude? Sexist? Politically incorrect? Did this writer have a clue what she was doing? Or is it that this just isn't my thing? I decided to keep an open mind and give it the benefit of the doubt as I kept turning the pages. In spite of my initial reaction I found myself pulled into this story of a single mother abandoned by her husband desperate to make some kind of living in a world where getting the bills paid has always been up to her. This book however is no cliche. Her husband has her hundreds of dollars in debt over herbal supplements that were supposed to make their fortune but instead make everyone sick with diarrhea. He joins a cult and his character remains as much a mystery to the reader as it does to her. She applies for a job at a record company through a temp agency both of which made my skin crawl. As she goes through the flow however it becomes clear that this is no picnic for her either... but she is not about to be anybody's victim. The author is a brilliant writer who is clever enough to dance with words so doesn't leave typos or grammatical errors to create confusion. Some scenes were so funny I laughed out loud... my kind of humor, a rare treat! Recommended for players, pimps, tricks, hoes .... and oh yeah, feminists.
